I am currently a resident of an assisted living facility in Manhattan. When I started looking for a suitable residence, I was frustrated by the fact that I had no idea of what these places would be like to live in. The brochures and administrators don’t give you a feel for the day-to-day life. I have now lived in two residences over three years, and I do know what it’s like to live a cossetted life. It is mostly comfortable, but a little claustrophobic. You have to keep up your own interests and touch base with the world outside now and then.
I decided to write a book to share my insights with prospective residents, their adult children and other caregivers. The result is Assisted Living: An Insider’s View. You can read excerpts from this forthcoming publication on this website.
